Preparation training for joining OM’s disaster response volunteer register

The Disaster Response Training (DRT) is an intensive simulation-based course that will give you an overview of the Disaster Preparedness and Response sectors. The DRT will help you develop your transferable skills with a view to using them in relief work, while equipping you to deploy in support of OM’s disaster responses as part of our volunteer register.

The training will cover topics such as:

  • Humanitarian principles
  • Sphere standards and the cluster Approach
  • Teamwork in emergencies
  • Humanitarian logistics
  • Emergency needs assessments
  • Security and communications
  • Decision making in emergencies
  • Personal health in emergencies
  • Working with the UN, NGO's and host governments
  • Working with the media in disasters


Ministry Details

Made up of staff and volunteers with extensive experience and expertise, OM International Disaster Response (IDR) is ready to rapidly deploy to help local OM teams around the world respond to disasters. The Disaster Response Training (DRT) is the starting point for anyone who wishes to use their skills in this area of ministry. There is no requirement (or guarantee) to deploy following the training, and our training team will be able to discuss your suitability for relief work both during and after the training. https://www.om.org/idr


Participant Profile

You must be at least 21 years old and be able to communicate in English. You should have some cross cultural and international experience.



As part of this training you may need to be flexible during the disaster relief simulation.

Individuals must arrange their own transport. Airport pickup/drop-off can be organized from Lusaka international airport at additional cost. We will send out detailed travel information to accepted participants before the training.



You should be in good health and able to walk a reasonable distance without difficulty. You need proof of appropriate emergency health and medical insurance.



You are responsible for obtaining a visa if necessary. You are responsible for any costs relating to the visa process.
